How to cover a iron nail with copper using a chemical change.

The copper from the pennies mix with the acetic acid and forms the chemical compound copper acetate. The copper acetate coates the iron nail with copper.

Item needed:

A jar
1/4 cup acetic acid
A pinch of salt
10 to 20 copper pennies
An iron nail
Scouring powder

  1. Pour the acetic acid into a jar. Add the salt.
  2. Add the copper pennies to the jar. Let it set for about 15 minutes. You'll find that the nail is coated with copper, and the pennies are bright and clean.
